Bars in Koh Phangan
One comment before I talk about some of my favorite bars in Koh Phangan is that you can wander the beach with a bucket from anywhere in your hands, or beer from seven eleven, and basically do whatever you want! There are so many people selling buckets from stands along the main road, down the smaller roads and on the beach. Expect to pay around 150 baht from a stall on the roads for local drinks such as vodka, rum or whiskey (free poured in!) and up to 400/500 baht on the beach, particularly if it is premium alcohol such as Smirnoff vodka and Jägermeister.
Situated by the beach front is Haadrin resort where you can sit outside on blankets and cushions on the beach. We had a mojito bucket for 300 baht which was delightful! Local and western food available to eat in or outside.
Drop In Bar is on the east side of Haad Rin Sunset Beach pulling in the crowds with fire skipping and basketball competitions where you can win free drinks. The buckets of vodka and red bull for only 160 baht and the mixture of rnb and hip hop music kept us coming back most nights! Definitely one of the most popular and loudest bars on the beach front in Haad Rin.
With a prime spot in the middle of the beach, Cactus is unsurprisingly one of the busiest bars on Haad Rin beach and also one of the loudest! Playing more rnb and hip hop music, there is a great atmosphere with two large bars on the beach to get your beers and buckets from and more bars inside. You will also find the fire chicken limbo at Cactus if you fancy joining in! Cactus is definitely one of the best bars in Koh Phangan.
Before I visited, I had read about Amsterdam Bar in a number of great blogs (including one of my favourites The The Wandering Blonde recommending the bar for great views of the sunset. Situated a 30 minute drive from Sarikantang – link we travelled in one of the shared tuk tuks for the fixed price of 200 baht per person.
Located high up on a hill, we were dropped off at the bottom of the stairs to climb to the top and were greeted with a wonderful open air view, dj’s playing house music and a swimming pool if you fancy a dip!
With propped up blankets and cushions, Amsterdam Bar was a gorgeous way to watch the sunset. I recommend getting there for around 5/530pm if you can as it gets busy quickly and you want to settle down before the sun goes in. Tie your visit in with Thong Sala Night Market which is just a five minute drive away.
At the furthest southerly point of Haad Rin beach is The Rock, which is aptly named given it is situated on top of a large rock!! With a more chilled out vibe than some of the other bars in Koh Phangan, you can request your own music and enjoy happy hour every day from 5-7pm with any cocktail for 100 baht and small beers only 50 baht. I had a delicious Amaretto Sour (if you read my blogs you will know how much I love amaretto!) but they have a wide variety available!
If you are travelling alone or on a budget, definitely stay at Same Same. Right in the centre of Haad Rin, this Swedish owned and run hostel and bar has a vibrant atmosphere with parties most nights, buffet dinners and quizzes.
We had drinks here and everyone was dancing on tables and having a great time. It seems to be one of the best bars to visit before heading down the beach!
We also eat here the day before the Full Moon Party and had some carby dishes to line our stomachs – Nachos Supreme: tortilla chips loaded with melted cheese, marinated chicken, homemade salsa, kidney beans, jalapenos and sour cream and Potato Wedges with chilli con carne and cheese.
